For several years, the leadership of Hope for the Hungry has sensed that Christ's command to "Go ye into all of the world" includes the local community around our headquarters in Belton, Texas. In fact, Jesus' exhortation is very clear:
"Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison and come to You?' And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it unto Me.'"
-- Matthew 25: 37-40 (NKJV)
It is no surprise to see people from all walks of life come into our office seeking assistance. Life has its ups and downs, and circumstances can blindside any of us to the point of losing our bearings. The love of Jesus Christ and dignity are the primary ingredients offered to those in need. Because assistance requires a team effort we often contact area help agencies on their behalf when the need is greater than our ability to provide. We believe that if God sent them to us, He expects us to assist them, even if we simply redirect them to the correct source of assistance. Our desire is to bless a few people thoroughly rather than a large number of persons peripherally.
Additionally, Hope for the Hungry, in conjunction with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, has been reaching out to children in low-income housing since 1999. It is amazing to watch approximately 30-50 college students gather on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to pray and then go into the most poverty-stricken housing areas in our community. The love of Christ is demonstrated to many children through one-on-one time, games, and stories. Armed with the love of Jesus Christ, these students share their hearts and their time, telling them about the One who created them and who longs to have fellowship with them. The children eagerly anticipate the arrival of the students and literally hang onto them as they absorb the much sought-after attention given to them so freely. |
